Hungry Russians Bears Get Their Fill…On Human Remains

by Seedorama Staff on October 28, 2010

Humans aren’t the only ones affected by the heatwaves and wildfires that swept Russia this summer. The wildfires destroyed the berries and vegetables that comprise the daily diet of Russia’s bear population. In desperation, nearly 120,00 to 140,00 bears have turned to human remains in the face of famine.

The Guardian describes two women from a Russian village coming across a large brown bear unearthing a human body from a grave site and feasting on the decomposing corpse:

From a distance it resembled a rather large man in a fur coat, leaning tenderly over the grave of a loved one. But when the two women in the Russian village of Vezhnya Tchova came closer they realised there was a bear in the cemetery eating a body.

The bears aren’t just sticking to dead humans. A young man in northern Russia reported being mauled by one of the area’s hungry bears.
