While in the North, it’s unorthodox to plant trees with fear of harsh winters, with the mild winters that southerner’s experience, it’s actually the perfect time. Many gardening experts are urging homeowners to plant trees now rather than in the spring season.

One of the many reasons that surround this philosophy is that of root growth. By planting trees in the fall, you give them adequate time to establish long roots, and prepare for the harsh summers that shine down on the South.

As long as you’re not experiencing below 20 for weeks at a time, trees will most likely survive. But just in case, protecting them above ground isn’t a bad idea. So for all you Southerners out there – head over to your local nursery!
