Apple Patents Solar Paneled iPod and iPhone

by Seedorama Staff on June 8, 2010

Seedorama did a recent feature on the Nokia Bicycle Charger, which charges your phone while pedaling. Similarly, Apple might be integrating a new way to charge your phone. Apple filed for a patent for media players to have integrated touch sensor solar panel surfaces.

The technology takes solar power to a whole new level. Having the solar cells underneath the touch screen is something that, to our knowledge, hasn’t been capitalized on a mass scale.

The solar panels would be hidden under the surface, allowing Apple to keep a design similar to what they have now. With the recent iPhone 4 having a glass back, rather than metal, it gives even more weight to the assumption that Apple plans on making the iPhone, or possibly the iPad, a solar powered device in the future.

But if this technology does hit the Apple shelves, we’re confident to say that it’d be a revolutionary device that captures the hearts of Apple lovers. The idea of having a product that charges while you use it in everyday life, out and about, is astonishing. The amount of consumers that would jump on this bandwagon would be truly extraordinary.
